Back-to-Business: Financial Tasks to Tackle Before Fall

Summer can be a slower, more relaxed time for many businesses. But as September approaches, routines pick back up, projects get underway, and the pace can change quickly. Before the busy fall season begins, taking a little time to get your finances in order can help you avoid playing catch-up later.

You don't need to overhaul your entire financial system. A few focused tasks now can give you a clearer picture of where your business stands and help you head into fall with confidence.

1. Bring Your Bookkeeping Up to Date

If bookkeeping has taken a back seat over the summer, now is the time to catch up. Review your transactions, make sure expenses are categorized correctly, and reconcile your bank and credit card accounts.

Having current books gives you a more accurate picture of your business and makes it easier to spot issues before they become bigger problems.

It also means you'll have reliable financial information to work with when making decisions about hiring, spending, or investing in your business.

2. Review Your Cash Flow

Before fall expenses start piling up, take a look at your current cash flow. Review how much money is coming in, what's going out, and what expenses you expect over the next few months.

Pay particular attention to outstanding customer invoices. If clients have unpaid balances, following up now can help improve your cash position before you enter a busier period.

A simple cash flow forecast can also help you anticipate periods when expenses may temporarily exceed revenue.

3. Revisit Your Budget

The budget you created at the beginning of the year may no longer reflect your reality. Revenue, expenses, staffing needs, and business priorities can all change throughout the year.

Review your actual results against your original budget. Are you spending more than expected in certain areas? Have some costs decreased? Is revenue tracking ahead or behind your original expectations?

Use what you've learned during the first part of the year to make adjustments for the remainder of the year.

4. Check Your Tax Obligations

Fall is a good time to make sure you haven't overlooked any tax-related responsibilities. Depending on your business, this could include GST/HST filings, payroll remittances, corporate tax instalments, or other required payments.

If your business has experienced significant changes in revenue or expenses this year, it may also be worth discussing your estimated tax position with your accountant. A little planning now can help prevent an unexpected tax bill later.

5. Review Your Payroll and Staffing Costs

If you're planning to hire additional employees, increase hours, or make changes to your team in the fall, take a close look at what those changes will mean financially.

Remember that the cost of an employee extends beyond their salary or hourly wage. Employer payroll costs, vacation pay, benefits, and other employment-related expenses can all affect your budget.

Understanding the full cost before making a hiring decision helps you plan responsibly.

6. Look Ahead to Year-End

December may still feel far away, but the final months of the year can go by quickly. Now is a good time to identify any major purchases, investments, hiring plans, or other financial decisions you expect to make before year-end.

Discussing these plans with your accountant early can give you more time to understand the financial and tax implications and make informed decisions.

Start Fall With a Financial Clean Slate

Getting back into your regular business routine doesn't have to mean immediately jumping into a long to-do list. Taking a few hours to review your books, cash flow, budget, tax obligations, and upcoming expenses can put you in a much stronger position for the months ahead.

The goal isn't simply to prepare for a busy fall—it's to make sure your financial systems can keep up with it.
